Welcome Back! First Grade Information

 Hello Families!

Thank you for joining us on Monday for Back to School Night! It was wonderful to be able to share information with you about distance learning this year. We are excited to make this year special for your child and their first grade experience! We know that it will take lots of patience and many helping hands, but we are all in this together!

Distance Learning Class Schedule:

You can find our class schedule by visiting our Schoology page! There is an A week and a B week schedule. We will begin our school year with the A week schedule! You can also access our schedule by clicking here

Scholastic News Payment:

In first grade we will be using Scholastic News magazines. They are weekly magazines that help build reading skills and increase science and social studies knowledge. They also align to our first grade curriculum and are interactive for our students. There are 4 issues each month. In order to purchase a class subscription, first grade teachers are asking for $7.00 per student. This year all Scholastic News payments will be accepted online. Your child received their first set of Scholastic News magazines in their school supply pickup bag. Please do not have your child complete their Scholastic News magazines at this point. We will have them built into our weekly schedules. Thank you!

The online payment process will open on Tuesday, September 8th and run through Wednesday, September 30th. To make your payment, you can visit the Pinebrook webpage and and click on the online payments tab to access the parent portal for online payments, or you can click here to access the online payment portal. We will discuss a safe way to distribute these to our students every month with Mr. Thiessen.

School Supply Bag Materials:

Today your child received their teacher supplied school materials. Please take the time to review the information on the pink information page carefully to ensure that materials are being used appropriately. Many of the materials we will not use until the start of school or a few weeks into the school year. We understand that our students are excited to start using their supplies, but we ask to wait so they last throughout the school year.

***Our dry erase boards are currently missing from your school supply material bags. They were ordered last week and did not arrive in time. We will provide further information about dry erase boards when they arrive.

Raz-Kids Code: hdrumheller

This is a digital reading room located in LCPS.GO that students can use during independent reading. After we complete our first literacy assessments, I will be able to assign students to appropriate reading levels. For now, they are welcome to go in and explore on their own! My suggestion would be to start with books between level A-D. If your student used Raz- Kids in Kindergarten, their account has now changed to a first grade account. You will find helpful directions and a login card in the supply bag you picked up today. Please pay close attention to the teacher username and your student’s password, as this has changed since Kindergarten.

Dreambox is a fantastic math resource located in LCPS.GO. It automatically sets the pace for learning based on student’s performance. I am also able to go in and check progress which will help guide my teaching. You can find this under the folder “Math” in LCPS.GO.

We ask as a first grade team, that you please take the time to access Schoology sometime before Tuesday morning. Your child’s Schoology page will provide them classroom information. Your child can access Schoology from their assigned Chromebook device and by entering LCPS Go.

** Please remember that your child needs to be logged onto their student Chromebook device to access our Google Meets.

No Specials on Tuesday!

Students will not have specials on Tuesday, September 8th. Teachers will not be providing instruction at that time, so students may use their assigned specials time as a break. We will begin a normal specials schedule on Wednesday, September 9th.

Class Directory and Parent Survey:

Please take the time to complete our class directory and parent survey! Our class directory is optional, and will be shared out to our classroom families once all who would like to participate have completed their submission. Please complete by Friday, September 11th if you are participating! Also, you can access the parent  survey here. This survey includes questions that will help me better understand your family, child, and home dynamic. In order to support your child in the best way possible, it is important for me to understand the various factors that have shaped your child into the beautiful person they are today! I am not only here for your child, I am here for you as well. We are all in this together, as a team! I look forward to learning more about you and your child!
